One of the items I want to make a the bag of Smith’s Crisps – here in their original form of a greaseproof paper bag with a separate blue paper twist of salt in the packet, around 1935.
In the 1930s crisps could still be bought weighed out loose – or in the ‘picnic’ box seen in this advert. Smith’s based then in Brentford (were they’d moved from Cricklewood in 1927) had started business in the early 1920s – bringing this ‘convenience snack’ to the notice of the increasingly affluent middle-classes who had money to spend on such frivolities. The name is still seen, although as they’re now owned by the same company as Walkers Crisps it is more subsidiary to that brand.
